Opening thoughts

So I've been spending a lot of time on BoardGameGeek over the past year, and my hobby interests have led me back to a favourite pastime from my teens and twenties: board wargames.

For me, it started when my dad bought a copy of Panzerblitz by Avalon Hill in the mid 70s. It wasn't getting much table time until I borrowed it and spent the time learning the rules. Then the journey began, leading to Panzer Leader and Arab Israeli Wars, which were sister publications.

I started acquiring games at the operational and strategic level such as Battle of the Bulge and finally the enormously complex Third Reich. In high school I got to know a few fellow gamers and we had many exciting evenings up into the college years when we drifted apart.

In a fit of charity, I gave away a number of games to a rummage sale. Oh well, they went to a good cause. The games I kept had to be stored in the basement until recent times, semi-forgotten. Some have held up better than others.

Back to the present: a large number of the old titles I liked plus some that never came into my collection are now available on eBay and the Geek Market, so there's been the chance to build up a collection again.

Next time, I'll start reviewing some favourites from the collection. Bye for now!
